<p> <strong>Wire feed welding machines</strong> are also known as <em>mig welding machines</em> or for short, a mig welder.</p>
<p>Regardless of what you call the machine they all have the same basic features.</p>
<p>Going by the description of the name, you need to feed wire.  As this wire is feeding, electricity melts it and the base metal together.  This is essentially how it works.  As long as you keep wire up to the electric arc you will be a<span id="more-71"></span>ble to weld all day long.</p>
<p>Now to control this you hold on to what is called a mig welding gun.  This allows you to accurately place where you want your weld to be.</p>
<p>Wire feed welding machines are rated by their power output in amperage (Amps).  So for example a small machine might only be rated at say 90 amps and a large machine might be rated at 500 amps.</p>
<p>The more amps the more electricity is used which means you have to heat needed to weld thick metal.</p>
<p>Another point to look at, is what is called duty cycle.  Now just because one machine might be rated at 100 amps and another machine is rated at 140 amps this doesn&#8217;t mean that the 140 amp machine is better.  Welding duty cycle is a figure that is given for how much work the welder can do at full power and for how long.</p>
<p>This is rated in a percentage, so for example 20%, 30% and 40%.  What this tells you is that how long you can weld for in either a five minute block or ten minute block of time.  So if your machine is rated at 20% duty cycle you could only weld at full power for 20% of either 5 minutes or 10 minutes. The trick here is to know what time frame your duty cycle is rated at.</p>
<p>So let&#8217;s assume that your machine is using a 10 minute time cycle.  This means that you can weld for two minutes at full power (20%).  Now for the rest of the time which is eight minutes you cannot weld at all, you have to let the machine cool down.  This is definitely one thing to look out for when you go to buy a mig welding machine.</p>
<p>A wire feed welding machine will also use consumables.  The main consumables that you will need to keep buying will be your contact tips, nozzles and shrouds and gas diffuser.  There are other consumables that do need replacing but not so frequently.  They are your liner, contact tip holder and maybe a few O-rings depending on what model welding torch you use.</p>

<p>all you need to know to weld like an expert.  <H3>Help answer the question about mig welding</H3>When Mig Welding how can you see what you are doing?<br />I&#039;ve never done it before and I&#039;m scared to try. I have to do it next week at a volunteer job only for this once but I&#039;m still nervous of doing something wrong. My question is when you have a mask on (really dark) how can you see what you are doing?Any tips on this welding are greatly appreciated, even really basic things.<br />

<p>Welding is used as a fabrication process in every small and large-scale industry. This is an efficient, economical and dependable process of joining two or more parts of metal. The process finds its applications in open air, underwater and outer space.</p>
<p>Among the welding processes, arc welding is widely used mainly because of its low capital and running costs. Arc welding is the fusion of two pieces of metal by an electric a<span id="more-6"></span>rc between the pieces being joined &ndash; the work pieces &ndash; and an electrode that is guided along the joint between the pieces.</p>
<p>The four types of arc welding are shielded metal arc welding, gas metal arc welding, flux-cored arc welding, and submerged arc welding.</p>
<p>Shielded metal arc welding (SMAW) also known as manual metal arc (MMA) or stick welding, is the most popular among the arc welding processes primarily because of the versatility of the process and the simplicity of its equipment and operation. This process is preferred for repair work and construction applications as this requires minimum operator training and inexpensive equipment, albeit slower weld times.</p>
<p>On the other hand, Gas metal arc welding (GMAW) is a high-speed but less versatile welding process. It is a semi-automatic or automatic welding process that uses a continuous wire feed as an electrode and an inert or semi-inert shielding gas to protect the weld from contamination. Given its speed and versatility, GMAW is popular in the automobile industry.</p>
<p>Similarly, flux-cored arc welding (FCAW) uses the same equipment as the GMAW except that it employs wire consisting of a steel electrode tube surrounding a powder fill material. This cored wire is more expensive compared to the standard solid wire and generates extra shielding gas and/or slag, however, it permits higher welding speed and greater metal penetration.</p>
<p>Submerged arc welding (SAW) is a high-productivity welding method in which the arc is struck beneath a covering layer of flux. Because contaminants in the atmosphere are blocked by the flux, this process increases arc quality.</p>
<p>Arc welding is a safe process when proper precautions and operating procedures are strictly followed. Employing new technology and protection measures will greatly reduce its potential hazards.</p>
<p>Several institutions are offering various welding trainings to cater to the heightened demand for arc welders or welding engineers for a wide range of applications in different industries like engineering, construction, and tourism all over the world.</p>

<p> Welding has been around for centuries, though not in the forms most commonly used today. One of the first welding processes ever used was known as forge welding. Forge welding attempts to join two metals through a process of heating, and then pounding and striking. It&#8217;s what blacksmiths did. But since then, there have been quite a few advancements in the welding world. With these new methods and techniques, welding has left the confines of indust<span id="more-12"></span>rial settings and can now be done practically anywhere &#8211; even underwater or in outer space! </p>
<p>As you can guess from the history of welding, the ability to join two or more pieces of metal together in a strong bond has been fundamental in our advancements in all areas of life, from housing to transportation; from manufacturing to repairs. Understanding welding basics can come in handy at work, but it will just as often come in handy around the house, in the workshop or on the farm. Because of this, welding is a skill that almost anyone can benefit from, male or female, young or old. </p>
<p>Why Weld? <br />
If you own any equipment or machinery that is metal, welding will certainly serve as a useful skill. Some typical goals of a welding job include: </p>
<p>Fixing stress cracks <br />
Reinforcing weak joints, and <br />
Cutting/shaping new parts and adapters from raw plating. </p>
<p>For chores like these, many welders rely on a process known as arc welding. Arc welding is a method where during the welding process, an electrical current jumps through an air gap (between a positively charged electrode and a negatively charged steel plate) and produces an enormous amount of heat. This heat is produced at the end of a welding rod, and when it does, metal can be melted. Well, it&#8217;s a little more complicated than that, but the concept is the same. </p>
<p>Perhaps the most common and economical welding method used today is AC (alternating current) arc welding. You can locate a simple AC welder just about anywhere, such as your local farm store or home improvement center. This welding process is ideal for most of your simple, routine welding jobs. Therefore, AC arc welding is ideal for those of you just starting out. </p>
<p>Minimize Your Risk <br />
While arc welding isn&#8217;t incredibly complicated, there are a few risks and hazards that you should be aware of: </p>
<p>1. Exposure to radiation <br />
2. Flying sparks (in the form of globs of molten metal) <br />
3. Electric Shock <br />
4. Fumes <br />
5. Damage to your eyes, and <br />
6. Burns </p>
<p>However, by wearing protective clothing and specialized welding helmets and other gear, you can greatly reduce the inherent risks of welding. Here are a few other tips to help keep you safe while arc welding: </p>
<p>Make sure to work on a dry floor. Wear thick rubber shoes and dry leather welding gloves. </p>
<p>Be sure to use insulated electrode holders. <br />
Check to make sure that your equipment is all properly grounded. </p>
<p>Keep your work area properly ventilated to avoid inhaling any potentially toxic fumes. </p>
<p>Be on the look out for flying bits of melted metal. </p>
<p>Most importantly, be aware of any other people who are around you. If they aren&#8217;t wearing the proper gear, then keep them away from your project. </p>
<p>This will get you started welding safely &#8211; one of the most important things when learning a new craft.</p>

<p> <strong>Why has my MIG wire gone bad all of a sudden?</strong></p>
<p>&#8220;I&#8217;ve been using this MIG wire for the last six months without a problem&#8221;. &#8220;Now after having used many spools the wire its gone bad&#8221;. &#8220;What&#8217;s happened?</p>
<p>Sound familiar? The trouble here is that the person or company that you bought your MIG wire from cannot guarantee you quality.</p>
<p>Did you buy the cheapest stuff you could find? <span id="more-66"></span>Ha-ha&#8230;As the saying goes, &#8220;he who buys on price, and price only, gets what he paid for&#8221;.</p>
<p>Sounds harsh but that&#8217;s the truth. Quite often you find end users happily welding away with their current brand of MIG wire. When all of a sudden they go and open up the next new pallet of wire that just arrived, slap it on the machine and the welds are all over the place.</p>
<p>Spatter, burn backs wire not feeding properly and so. What&#8217;s going on, they think to themselves. &#8220;Ahh, I know, it must be a worn contact tip&#8221;. So off they go and replace the contact tip with a new one. But no, sure enough same problem. &#8220;Well, it&#8217;s been a while since I change the liner&#8221;. So off they go and do that. Yet sure enough the same problem is still there.</p>
<p>They think to themselves, &#8220;well I&#8217;ve changes everything else, it can&#8217;t be the wire. It&#8217;s brand new and I&#8217;ve been using it for over six months without any trouble&#8221;.</p>
<p>This is such a common thing to come across in the welding industry, and it affects everyone throughout the world. Whether you&#8217;re in the USA, Australia, New Zealand&#8230;anywhere.</p>
<p>So what is it, what&#8217;s the problem?</p>
<p>The problem is <strong>quality.</strong></p>
<p>The person who is supplying your wire can not guarantee you quality. But you think to yourself, it can&#8217;t be the wire, no way. I&#8217;ve been using this (xxxx) brand wire for ages. They are a huge massive company, they sell MIG&#8217;s, TIG&#8217;s all sorts of welding gear no way can it be the wire that&#8217;s giving me problems&#8230;.can it?</p>
<p>The trouble is that unless you are guaranteed the quality of you welding wire your &#8220;up a creek without a paddle&#8221;, so to speak.</p>
<p>With so many people selling welding wire these days it is extremely hard to come by a quality wire. The majority of goods made in the world today come from China or India. With huge populations and low wages, they are the cheapest places to buy things from.</p>
<p>There are over three hundred manufacturers of welding wire in China alone. What does this mean to the quality of your MIG wire?</p>
<p>This means that if the brand of wire on the box is (xxxx) they are not the manufacture of it. You need to ask the sales person&#8230;.ARE YOU THE MANUFACTURER OF THIS WIRE?</p>
<p>Because what happens behind the scenes is the company you bought the wire from has a big argument with their supplier in China or where ever. And they say stuff ya&#8230;.well go next door and buy from them. Hey with over 300 manufacturers in China alone they can pick and choose who they like.</p>
<p>So they change their manufacturing supplier, and this happens all the time. But when they change manufacturer the quality also changes. That&#8217;s why your wire has gone bad. And that&#8217;s why they can&#8217;t guarantee you the quality.</p>
<p>Simple as that.</p>
<p>Each time they change their manufacturing supplier the quality changes as well. There is a huge difference in quality of wires.</p>
<p><strong>Okay so what do I do now, which wire do I buy?</strong></p>
<p>The secret is to buy a wire that is supported by the manufacturer. You need a manufacturer that has been producing quality welding wires for years and years so that they have the art perfected.</p>
<p>Did you know that there are general &#8220;quality&#8221; MIG wires and precision MIG wires? Which type of wire do you think that the big boys use? When I say that I mean vehicle manufacturers, earthmoving manufacturers and so on, company&#8217;s that use it by the tonne. What do you think they are after in a welding wire?</p>
<p>They are after:</p>
<p>• Precision</p>
<p>• Reliability</p>
<p>• Repeatability</p>
<p>• Consistency</p>
<p>• Quality</p>
<p>• Accuracy</p>
<p>How much money would Toyota or Mitsubishi or Caterpillar lose per minute if a welding machine was down? I sure bet it would be an awful, awful lot of money. These manufactures don&#8217;t want a single welding machine in an assembly line to break down. Cause if one thing stops, the whole show stops.</p>

<p>These little bends in the wire can damage your wire feedability which in turn will affect your overall weld quality and feed.</p>
<p>When you are using a <a rel="external nofollow" target="_blank" href="http://www.everlastgenerators.com/products-category-58.html" title="Mig Welding Machine"><strong>MIG welding machine</strong></a> or a wire feed welding machine you have welding consumables that need replacing on a regular basis. Every MIG welding machine gun will have a shroud and contact tip or a nozzle. And then depending on which type of brand welding torch you have there will also be a gas diffuser or some kind of insulator.</p>
<p>I guess that most home welders or DIY will use what is meant by gasless welding wire. This process is also known as a flux cored wire. Be careful though because there are two different types of flux cored welding wires. There are a lot more than two, but for general home welding wire feed make sure that you get a gasless MIG welding wire feed that is an E71T-GS.</p>
<p>Now if you want to do decide to use a gasless MIG welding wire you are going to have to modify the wire feed rolls. The reason for this mig welding wire is because it is a flux cored wire the wire is not solid all that way through. The flux is on the in the interior of the wire the wire is very soft.</p>

I&#039;m running solid wire with shielding gas and the polarity is set up correctly. Almost seems like an insulator is failing.<br />
